Rules that guide how people should behave and cases handled are referred to as law.  Every society needs to have laws to ensure smooth running.  With the law, people will respect each other.  For most cases, those who fail to obey the law are punished.  This forces all concerned to obey the law.  Different types of laws apply to different societies.  What is considered law in one area might not apply in another area.  People, therefore, have to ensure that they are conversant with the laws of the land in which they are in.  This will save them from a lot of trouble as well as ensure their well-being.

Another branch of law is civil law.  It acts as a control as well as influences how people behave.  They mostly highlight on the rights and privileges of individuals.  They ensure that there are limits within which people are allowed to carry out different activities.  This also makes it possible for a person to own property.  They will be protected from forceful claiming of their property by selfish individuals.  With these laws, people are able to air out their views.  This ensures that people are not governed poorly.  It also makes all individuals equal by ensuring equal rights for them.  This means that no one will be favored than the other.

Environmental law is another branch of law.  These are meant to safeguard the environment.  They relate to waste disposal and management.  This guides industries to ensure that their wastes do not cause harm to people.  They also state where wastes should be disposed off.  Existence of these laws have led to the development of recycling industries in order to make use of the available wastes.  They also ensure that the environment is maintained for future generations.  Different bodies have been set up to enforce these laws.

Another branch of law is criminal law.  They act as a guideline on how offenses should be treated.  They give punishments for offenders as well as giving them a chance for fair trial.  The society is thus made safer as criminals are apprehended.
